My doctoral research explores how museums in the UK approach decolonisation, and how initiatives framed as ‘diversification’ can unintentionally reinforce racial and colonial dynamics and make whiteness invisible, protecting it.
I am developing an emerging theory, The Disagreeable Mirror, which considers how exhibitions can decentre the fantasy of whiteness and challenge the fantasy of ‘Otherness’ in white socialisation. The aim is to reduce harm in museum spaces while enabling audiences and institutions to engage critically with ‘race’, colonial history, and their own positionality.
I use art, and creative writing and poetry as part of how I write, reflect, and research, weaving authenticity and lived experience into my work. This approach allows me to explore complex social and cultural dynamics in ways that are deeply informed by personal insight as well as scholarly inquiry.
